BUYING DIRECTOR, MATCHESFASHION.COM
As head buyer for Matchesfashion.com, Natalie Kingman is officially our new best friend! She gets to jet around the world finding the newest, coolest designers to feature on one of the world’s best fashion sites. Our new fashion fairy godmother breaks down what is investment worthy for the fall, the new guard of designers to keep our eyes peeled for, and of course how to pack for vacation like a fashion pro. We loved hearing about her passion for collaborating with young designers and giving them a platform to show their talent....guess Natalie is more than one person’s fairy godmother! #FashionRoyalty
VACATIONSTYLE: What is your favorite part about being the Director of Buying for MATCHESFASHION.COM?
NATALIE KINGMAN: The best thing is being able to see all the best collections in the world first hand. I find this a real privilege and always will. Teams of people, or sometimes just one, will pour their vision and hard work into these collections and it is a labour of love. The travel is also a treat, as tiring as it can be, I get to visit some wonderful cities and countries regularly and understand our clients globally.
VS: What are some of fashion tips that everyone should know when packing for vacation?
NK: When I am planning to travel around a bit I pack lightweight dresses and cover ups as well as a go-with-everything pair of espadrilles, one of my vacation staples. I also love Sophie Anderson’s woven bag collection and always pack one when I go on holiday – they work for both day and night and add a pop of colour to any outfit. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, is swimwear and this season I love Marysia one piece that is reversible so you are actually getting two in one!
VS: What’s the current trend this fall that everyone should invest in?
NK: It is all about the over-the-knee boot this season - every designer had their take on the trend from sexy and skin tight at Edun to relaxed, slouchy and suede at Isabel Marant to lower block heels at Nicholas Kirkwood and Gianvito Rossi. Channel the 70’s boho vibe seen across the runway and wear with a midi skirt Stevie Nicks style or opt for a looser tunic dress.
VS: Can you tell us about some exciting designers that are fairly new to the scene?
NK: Marques Almeida – they have really grown their international presence over the past few seasons and extended their design vocabulary to include beautiful brocades so look forward to seeing how they continue to move the brand forward. Vetements - a highly creative collective of designers, I love their relaxed deconstructive aesthetic, Thomas Tait known for his minimalist, sporty approach to silhouette and cut and young Irish design Danielle Romeril – think innovative fabrications, intricate surface embellishments and directional cuts.
VS: How would you describe your style?
NK: I have an eclectic style, I understand how best to dress for my shape, I also like to have fun with clothes. However, as I get older I find myself getting more classic pieces but I don't think my family would agree with that!
VS: What’s your go-to swimwear?
NK: Lisa Marie Fernandez offers the perfect high-waisted brief and matching bandeau which also flatters small busts.
VS: What was your favorite collaboration that you’ve done at MATCHESFASHION.COM?
NK: I love collaborating with designers we find these capsule collections do well for us as they are another way of injecting some freshness into the buy throughout the season. One of my favourites was Claire Barrow, as a new gen designer showing at London Fashion Week for the second time, we did a capsule collection of hand painted biker jackets and leather pouches. It was a really fun exclusive and we loved supporting such a young British designer.
VS: What designers do you have on your radar?
VS: What are five items you need to add for the upcoming holiday season?
VS: You travel a lot - what are your travel essentials?
NK: I never travel without my cushion and iPod. My essential beauty kit includes Aesop parsley seed serum for night, Eve Lom radiance cream for day and L'Oreal mythic hair oil and of course I always pack my Maison Michel hat - great for bad hair days.
VS: What are your favorite apps for traveling?
NK: The weather app – can’t go anywhere without, the weather depends on what I pack.
VS: Favorite hotels? or style of brand?
NK: I like small eclectic hotels that feel very personal there is a particular hotel in Paris I like called La Reserve.
VS: Most memorable trip?
NK: Kyoto in Japan was amazing - Geishas drinking coffee, trainee samurais, temples, blossom, tea rituals, amazing food...The list goes on, it was a truly memorable experience and so beautiful!
VS: The best piece of advice anyone has ever given to you?
NK: To believe in yourself
VS: If you didn’t work in fashion what would you do?
NK: Probably a photographer as this is what I studied when I finished school or a stylist, which I did a bit of freelance in before becoming a buyer.
VS: What are your favorite shops and restaurants in the world?
NK: I love markets and the whole experience visiting them - whether they are food, local products, second hand, objects or arts. I find local produce of any kind really fascinating and everyone worldwide is individual to that country. My favorite restaurants change a lot but currently I love Petrelle in Paris.
