The Hamptons
Overview

Just as birds fly back north for the summer, New Yorkers flock east.  Whether you arrive by Jitney (fine), Luxury Liner (better), or private helicopter (best), Memorial Day weekend always marks the start of a new season on Long-Island’s famed stretch of high class beach towns: The Hamptons. From Westhampton to Montauk, from beach cottages to old-money McMansions, the eastern end of the island brims with Manhattanites seeking to escape the hot stuffy city for a crisp beachy breeze. Not to mention, summer parties on the Hamptons are the surefire spot to see and be seen. When summer strikes, The Hamptons are laden with socialites and celebs. Where better to show off this season’s beachy purchases? If not donned in your tennis whites, slip into your sundress and Ancient Greek Sandals before skipping into town, as you’re sure to run into everyone and their mother most anywhere public you go. You might even catch Tory herself, sipping a latte at the Golden Pear. Perhaps you’ll run into Gwyneth Paltrow at a Saturday Polo Match, or spot Sarah Jessica Parker under a sun hat at the beach. Christie Brinkley, Cameron Diaz, and Sofia Vergara are other fashionable visitors to these beautiful beach towns.

Clearly, it’s no secret that the Hamptons are a social hub and a half. But for the days you just want to bask in the sun with privacy, take a quiet stroll, or browse beyond the brand names, it’s easy enough to find a private nook to escape the buzz for while. Every girl needs some kickback time so that she can show her freshest face and fashion at the next event. Whether you want a weekend of socializing or seclusion, the Hamptons are abound with summertime amusement. So pour the rosé and let the good times roll.

DINING

Set in the famous and original luxury five-star hotel of Bridgehampton, the Topping Rose House’s kitchen has just been taken over by celebrity chef Jean-Geroges Vongerichten. Introducing a casually chic restaurant that stays true to Toppin Rose House’s farm-to-table meals with produce grown on the property’s one-acre farm and ingredients from other local farmers fishermen. Be sure to look your best at this elite establishment (reservations are only taken at least 28 days in advance!); consider sporting an OTS dress as you settle down at your table in this country barn-esque setting, juxtaposed with contemporary adornments to create a modern feel. For a slightly more casual but equally elegant outing, consider Pierre’s—Bridgehampton’s chic, classic and festive establishment with delectably fresh seafood. For some Asian flare to spice up your summer weekend, Philippe Chow in East Hampton offers a luxurious dining experience of Beijing style cuisine, boasting an award-winning Peking Duck. Their Lychee Martini is delicious with a New York Twist, so feel free to sample one, two, or more, before gliding over to Philippe’s adjacent nightclub, a sexy and exclusive venue just opened under its new name this Memorial Day weekend. Scarpetta Beach off Montauk Highway is a lovely little Italian venue rich with flavor, with a seaside atmosphere unique from its NYC meatpacking location. Seeking fine Italian dining closer to Sag Harbor or Southampton?

Enjoy at exquisite evening at Tutto il Giorno, with locations in both towns. For a simple Sag Harbor Sunday brunch, LT Burger at the harbor is a deliciously simple spot for the whole family. Another quintessential Sag Harbor dining spot, Harlow East couples it’s menu of fresh fish and salads with blue and white beach tones against dark wood flooring, creating the perfect ambiance for this open-air waterfront establishment. Think a flirty sundress and wedges to fit right in to this beachy yet upscale joint. For open-air seafood Montauk style, dine at The Surf Lodge where acclaimed Australian executive chef Chris Rendel serves up an organic market-based menu focused on daily caught seafood from Montauk fishing boats. Just daytripping to Montauk for lunch? The Lobster Roll is a casual classic for low-key beach days when shorts and flip-flops are more your vibe. Continue the casual seafood theme in East Hampton at Bostwick’s Chowder House, the esteemed spot for fresh seafood in a laid back setting (not to mention live music every Sunday night). We really hope you still like seafood at this point, because Moby’s shellfish is excellent, but if you’re looking to vary it up a bit their menu also offers delicious pastas and woodfire pizzas in a cozy rustic atmosphere. Friends in your 30’s should stick around after dinner for drinks and enjoy a Dark & Stormy or Margarita freed from those “lawless youth” types. In Southampton, Red Bar, the “Fashionably Casual American Brasserie,” is an easy favorite for classic cuisine in a social atmosphere with chic red décor (hence the name).  Venture out of the classic Hamptons towns to the south shore of shelter island the where you can savor grilled octopus and fresh pasta at Sunset Beach, whose menu is reminiscent of summertime classics of coastal Italy.  Get your Grecian fix at Nammos Eastiatorio in Southampton, with such luxurious Greek cuisine you’ll feel transported to the Aegean coast.

NIGHTLIFE

When in comes to bar hopping Hampton’s style, Montauk hosts the most elite spots. Stop one is Regent Cocktail Club, great for after dinner drinks at Gurney’s to get the evening going as the sun goes down. Solé East is another hotspot with a chic backyard bar. Sport a trendy Indah sundress to transition from sunset to late night as you make moves to The Harbor for DJ’s and live performances into the early morning hours. If you can’t hit all three in one night, be sure to make an appearance at Montauk’s The Sloppy Tuna the next night for a good old-fashioned beach party. NYC favorite, Finale, brings its brand to stylish Easthampton, including their famed #IHEARTSATURDAYS party.  You can find another treasured city spot, 1OAK, in Southampton, drawing an elite crowd of clubbers Memorial through Labor Day each summer.

When you’re not slathered in lotion in a beach chair or perusing town shops, the Hamptons offer ample other activities to keep a girl busy. When in East Hampton, pay a visit to Guild Hall, the center for visual and performing arts. In addition to comedy shows and musical performances from well-known names, board member Alec Baldwin frequently hosts readings and theater performances, including a revival of “All My Sons” this past June. If fine arts are more up your alley, the Parrish Art Museum newly located in Water Mill (moved from Southampton Village in 2012) features a collection of more than 2,600 works of art from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, including those of esteemed masters Jackson Pollock and Roy Lichtenstein. Before browsing the antique shops on Bridgehampton, make at stop at the cozy Dan Flavin Art Institute, which displays the artist’s florescent light sculptures in strikingly vibrant colors that illuminate the former firehouse (and former church) in which they are housed. For brave beach lovers, consider taking a lesson at the Flying Point Surf School in Southampton; Tory Burch chose this school when she wanted her kids to learn to ride the waves, though they offer lessons for adults too. Still, looking great in a wetsuit is no easy feet. Keep yourself feeling and looking great by signing up for a couple of the Hamptons numerous workout classes where you can run, ride, or stretch next to Kelly Rippa or Gwyneth Paltrow.

Some of our favorites include SoulCycle (obviously), FlywheelTracy Anderson and Barry’s Bootcamp. Expect a rainbow of Lululemon.  You can find a more mellow workout in East Hampton at Paddle Diva, offering lessons and equipment for stand up paddle boarding—an activity that’s still quite the celebrity ab fad. At the end of Napeague Harbor Road tucked between Amagansett and Montauk, you can find the Hither Hills State Park Walking Dunes Trail, a self-guided nature walk through the dunes (some reach an impressive 80 feet!) whose name comes from the fact that these mountains of sand shift several feet each year. Finally, Hamptons summer sunsets are a can’t miss; make sure you spend at least one evening at the Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack, donned in a simple maxi and strappy wedges for an evening of traditional European feel watching the sun go down and illuminate the vineyard fields. It’s not only beautiful, it’s a great place to have a night with top notch cocktails (hint: it’s a winery…) and nightly live music.
