Positano
Overview

Somewhere between a postcard and a dream, there is Positano. The first stop on the vertigo-inducing Amalfi Coast route, this tiny Italian town tumbles from cliff to sea in dramatic fashion. Inside its jumble of richly hued, rainbow-colored buildings, Positano boasts everything the modern day jet setter desires – from storied hotels to superb restaurants to beautiful boutiques – all tied up in a quaintly walkable package. Celebs can’t get enough of its breathtaking vistas and old world charm, so star sightings are on the regular. To name a few: Positano’s pebble crusted beach was the scene of Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk’s going public makeout sesh, while basically every honey-highlighted Hollywood heavyweight (think Sienna, Jennifer, Reese, Gisele, and Gwyneth) has gotten some intimate R&R here with at least one of their main squeezes. The fashion set (including Poppy Delevingne, Pernille Teisbaek, Rachel Zoe, Emrata and Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert) are also ga-ga for its gloriously Instagrammable views and inherently stylish settings. Whether your glamorous getaway is a honeymoon or a hookup, grab your bae, top up your Bellini and behold the epitome of luxurious romance, Positano.

To live la dolce vita in this glittering gem, we couldn’t recommend anywhere more than hotel Le Sirenuse. Not only does it offer top-notch accommodations, this family owned favorite incorporates an out-of-this-world dining experience at La Sponda while satisfying our need to shop at the sublimely cool Emporio Sirenuse. But really, the whole town exudes a retro ambiance that will have you feeling like a movie star in no time. If you yearn for the elegance of yesteryear, consider that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton fancied holidaying here, that Sophia Loren has been frolicking on its shores for decades, and that it was the inspiration for The Talented Mr. Ripley’s setting, taking its cool cred way back. Now you’ve got to dress the part. High season is Easter to September, making flirty frocks, funky bags and simple sandals all staples. How about a Caroline Constas OTS dress paired with a pair of Zanotti slides and finished off Cult Gaia ark bag? Sounds like a lotta likes to us. Kaftans are called for on the beach, and a Talitha interpretation atop a Missoni maillot hits the spot. It is truly criminal to not don a Dolce in this divine destination. From lemons to ceramics, recent D&G motifs are begging the be worn at say, Il San Pietro for aperitivo. Mamma mia, you look like a million bucks. Buon viaggio!

DINING

Since 1960, locals and longtime aficionados alike flock to the uber-casual & uber-fashionable eatery Da Adolfo. It’s the quintessential sand-between-your-toes lunch spot, so make a rezzy and take a private tender to the tiny Laurito beach, where Adolfo's shabby-chic beach cabana turns out unpretentious wood-grilled seafood paired with ice-cold white wine better than anyone on the beach — perhaps anywhere. Le Sirenuse’s Champagne & Oyster Bar gives new meaning to shucking with a view, as it’s one of the most sophisticated spots to see and be seen. One of the top tables on the coast (also at Le Sirenuse), La Sponda’s 400-count candles lighting the terrace will romance you as you dine fresh Neopolitan cuisine.  A farmhouse eatery with two Michelin stars, Don Alfonso 1890 is known throughout Italy and promises one of the most majestic dining experiences in Positano. A stylish hidden gem with a fun scene that just so happens to be one of Carla Sersale’s favorites, Next2 serves an innovative takes on classic Campagnia cuisine, with a focus on ultra-fresh seafood. Have your fair share of fish & ravioli as you sit amongst the locals at the more casual waterfront Il Pirata. Located in the heart of Positano in a charming art gallery full of precious and ancient works, you’ll find the cozy, casual bistro-style wine bar Max. Il San Pietro’s Michelin starred Zass overlooks Praiano & the coast, but for an even more unique 360° fine-dining experience, see where the magic happens in the first-ever state-of-the-art eco-kitchen!

APERITIF & NIGHTLIFE

The new contemporary al fresco Franco’s Bar at Le Sirenuse is not just another seaside bar: it’s an elegant raft suspended above the sea with an old-fashioned, quality-first drinks menu. Translation — it’s the town’s chicest place for an apertif, no matter the time of day! For sunset aperitifs, Il San Pietro’s large and dramatic terrace surrounded by lush gardens is a must. From first sight, Chez Black might look like a touristy restaurant but it just so happens to have an upstairs grotto bar that’s the busiest place in town. The 1950’s retro-inspired disco lounge is literally carved out of the mountainside and captures the essence of summer nights. And last but most certainly not least, enter a cool cave and dance with the locals late into the night at the disco-inspired Music on the Rocks

Explore

When you’re not laying horizontal, there’s tons to explore in this small town. For the most memorable hike you’ll ever take with out-of-this-world views, try the Path of the Gods that starts above Amalfi and can end by descending right in from of Le Sirenuse. You can also climb 1,700 steps to the village of Nocelle for the ultimate bum workout — where you’ll take step by step through carpets of wildflowers and up to one of the most breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast. See the Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Grotto), the green-tinted sister to Capri’s fabled Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto). An elevator leads into the grotto, itself an interesting destination for Gaudi-like stalactite formations. For a more unique experience with a local touch, visit the local Limoncello Factory “Il Gusto della Costa” in Praiano, where the owner will introduce you to the world of the Amalfi coast lemons followed by a tasting. Private boat trips are a must, as is a stop at the beautiful Nerano Bay for lunch at some of the best restaurants on the coast. And if you’re looking to leave Positano for a day, make it to Furore for a wine tasting and tour of the Cantine Marisa Cuomo vineyard, the producers of one of the best white wines in all of Italy. And when you're you’re not posted up poolside at one of the glamorous hotels, hit the beach. Most recognizable thanks to its colorful rows of umbrellas, Spiaggia Grande is Positano’s main beach. A romantic path leads the way to Fornillo, a smaller and more secluded beach away from the crowds. Laurito is Positano’s best kept secret and can only be reached by private boat. For decades, this small and wild beach has been the place where locals escape the noise and crowds of summer (let’s just say your chance of spotting Giambattista Valli here is pretty big!). Arienzo, also known as the “300-steps beach,” the number you’ll be counting down (and back up!) to reach it from the Strada Statale main road. On the walk down, you’ll get a glimpse into some of the Amalfi Coast’s most luxurious villas hidden in the verdant corners of the mountain.
