Courchevel
Overview

Rather than sulk through the post-holiday blues, this winter, escape to the “playground of the posh” that is Courchevel, France. A snow-draped paradise tucked away in the French Alps, Courchevel is the most elite resort collection of Les Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski areas in the world. Home to the very first passenger chairlift, this alpine escape has boasted celebrity visitors and industry titans since its beginning in the 1940s. Once a favorite of Brigitte Bardot, many celebrities have followed her lead, with posh visitors including Posh Spice herself (with hubby David Beckham), Erica Pelosini, Olivia Palermo, and George and Amal Clooney. It’s high time you join them on the slopes.

In the Alps, exquisite skiing is a given; yet in this elite ski town (or rather, kingdom) the après ski lifestyle is just as relevant—if not more—as the snowy slopes themselves. When the clock strikes happy hour, transition from clunky ski boots to classy over-the-knee boots and saunter over to the nearest champagne bar for some deserved R&R. Packing for ski trips can be tricky and often bulky, so we recommend sticking to winter classics with just a few trendy pieces (and extra room for vacay purchases). Silks, suedes, leathers, furs, and velvet are materials as warm as they are stylish and timeless, thus a no-fail formula with which to fill your suitcase.

In Courchevel, luxury awaits at each peak, turn, and valley, from a decadent restaurant scene, to the happening nightlife, and a fatally expansive spread of designer shopping. To help you get started on your spectacular winter rendezvous, we’ve narrowed down the sprawling glitz of to a few top picks. Pack your poles and your Pucci parkas…the Alps await!

DINING

Whether you’re a bunny slope cruiser or a black-diamond daredevil, skiing inevitably works up a healthy appetite; luckily, in the realm of fine dining, Courchevel definitely delivers. For a mid-day treat in Meribel, lunch on the sunny terrace of Allodis; the sweeping panoramic views are the perfect backdrop for the pics you’ll surely snap of the legendary dessert buffet. For a quick, tasty, and authentic meal, ski over to Chalet de Pierres on the Verdons slope; the menu is classic yet varied, and the terrace open yet heated, making for a perfect cozy crowd-pleaser. At the foot of 3 Vallés, be sure to stop at La Bouitte, charming restaurant run by father-son duo, René and Maxime Meilleur. Gaining the ever-coveted 3rd Michelin star in 2015, la Bouitte is a leader is delicious simplicity. For great views and delicious eats, pay a visit to the sunny terrace of Le Monchu Meribel, located on the Rhodes Piste (highlights include an extensive wine list and lovely tartares). In the mood for some mid-day revelry? Le Cap Horn is famed for its boozey lunches, where clientele dance on chairs as the DJ spins his set above the terrace. Beyond its festive allure, Le Cap Horn offers excellent cuisine, known to serve fresh sushi at an altitude of 2000m. Finally, you’ll find a more casual lunchtime vibe at La Soucoupegreat for group lunches.

The evenings permit more adventurous style options, freed from the confines of clunky boots and plush parkas (cute as they may be, an evening out beckons a more flattering ensemble).

There is no better place to showcase an elegant winter wardrobe than Courchevel’s impressive restaurant scene. Le Kintessence is worth mentioning again, as with 2 Michelin stars you’d be remiss to miss it, even if not staying in Le K2 PalaceIn fact, many of Courchevel’s most notable gourmet eateries are found within the hotels, including Le Chabichou, housed in the hotel of the same name and run by two-Michelin-starred chef, Michel RochedyHotel Lana is home to La Table du Lanaserving a fantastic fusion of Italian and French cuisine; we recommend enjoying the lobster lasagna with a view from the south-facing terrace. La Formagerie is another hotspot, known to serve the best raclette in all of Courchevel (in the know customers book a table upstairs in advance). Even if you initially come purely for a boomerang insta of melted cheese, you’ll leave gratified by the rest of the delicious menu and cozy ambiance as a whole. For dinner and a show, reserve a late table at La Mangeoire, a glamorous venue for live music and classic French delicacies. True to its name, Il Vino revolves around its wine—quite literally—you pick your vino and the restaurant pairs it to the best dishes. Skeptical? Perhaps knowing that the restaurant is run by Encrico Bernardo, an Italian connoisseur deemed Best Worldwide Sommelier at age 27, will quell your apprehension. Lastly, find rustic comfort and delectable gourmet at the Michelin-starred Restaurant Azimut, nestled in the heart of Le Praz village.

NIGHTLIFE

Mexican eatery by day and dance bar by night, Le Milk is a favorite among Courchevel’s young and young-at-heart. At this casual hotspot, don your favorite fashion-forward sneaks as you dance to the spinning beats of in-house DJs. The snowy sequel to Nammos Mykonos, Nammos Courchevel lures the fanciest and flashiest to its champagne-splashed terrace overlooking the slopes. After 2pm, the DJ’s start spinning in this designer chalet, making for one of the best après-ski scenes in the Alps.  Sharing a name with its sister club in Paris, the neon-lit marquee, L’Arc Courchevelregularly attracts a young, elite crowd to dance away the winter chills into the early morning hours. Slip into something velvet before sinking into the velvet couches at La Grange, one of Courchevel’s oldest nightclubs, routinely attracting a crowd of Hollywood stars, euro elite, and DJ royalty. Ski straight from the slopes into Le Bar Des Airelles (set in the Airelles Fairytale Hotel), where ski valet will lend you house slippers to go with your Dior ski ensemble as you mingle with fellow après-skiers (we recommend sampling the spiked hot cocoa to kick away the outdoor chill)

Do we need to state the obvious? Ahem Ski! Framed by dramatic alpine ridges, the downhill pistes in Les Trois Vallées has a range of runs that will suit all skiing levels. However, if you tire of the classic sport or just love to switch it up, there are also bountiful options for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding amid the Courchevel trails. If you want to see Courchevel from the top, maybe fancy a sunrise hot-air balloon ride, a private helicopter tour, or be super adventurous with some paragliding. And when you truly need break from the snowy chill, treat yourself to a (probably) well-earned spa day. If your accommodations cannot offer what you are looking for, some hotel spas are open to the public, though often at an added price. Alternatively, Destination Pamper delivers professional therapists to the comfort of your room, chalet, or villa, when the true diva in you requires ultimate privacy.
