HOW TO: TIE A TURBAN

In addition to the perfect touch of lipstick, a pop of color from a faux or real fur stole, or even layers of baubles by the beach, there's no better statement quite as glamorous as the turban.

The customary headwear worn throughout South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Near East, North Africa, and many more parts of the world, has made its way into the fashion realm and has long been a staple of jet set era icons, like Marisa Berenson, Natalie Wood, Twiggy and Veruschka.

So instead of opting for a messy topknot, or a tried-and-true pony on vaca, try a not-too-perfect side braid, or undone beach waves finished with a glamorous turban headband for a fresh look.

FOR A HALF TURBAN...

STEP 1: Start with a long rectangular scarf centred at your nape, then bring both ends to the front so they’re even in each hand.

STEP 2: Crisscross to form a tight “X” in front and twist one full turn, so the gathering is more pronounced.

STEP 3: Wrap both sides around to the back and tie in a knot.

FOR A FULL TURBAN...

STEP 1: Fold a large square shaped scarf into a triangle.

STEP 2: Place the center flat end of the scarf at the base of your head. Have the center tip of the triangle go over the head and lay in front of the face.

STEP 3: Take the left and right sides of the scarf cross over top of the head and tie around to the base of the neck. Make sure to tie tight enough to feel secure but not too tight or the turban will pop off.

STEP 4: Tuck excess fabric into the underside of the scarf.

STEP 5: Take the pointed tip of the front of scarf and tuck under the fabric at the crown of the head. Now you should have the perfect turban!
